Maher: If there is theme that has emerged from the 2008 election what would you say it was, some overarching theme we can hang our hat on?
Matt Taibbi: Well certainly at the beginning of the campaign the overarching theme was there was voter rebellion against media annoited front-runners. You had a series of candidates who weren't expected to do well, and did well like Huckabee, Ron Paul set fundraising records, John Edwards was considered a surprise, insurgent candidate. And then a succession of enevitable front-runners sort of fell by the wayside. You know, MCain, Hillary slipped up for a while there. The theme for a while was the voters were sick and tired of being told by the media who was going to be their nominee, but it seems to have come full-circle now and it looks like we might end up getting the same people that they told us we were going to get the first place which is sort of a supreme irony of it.
Maher: You mean Hillary & McCain?
Taibbi: Hillary and Mcain.
Maher: Isn't that something?
Taibbi: Especially now we have 70% of the country wants to withdraw from Iraq and we get 2 pro-war candidates. If that doesn't tell you how fucked up the system is then I don't know what to tell you.
