The left and Ron Paul
You write: "I'm just saying that he's not exactly the sort of candidate who ought to get the young progressives in the Bay Area excited."
Who are you to say what we "ought" to be getting excited about? My parents, both retired school teachers, democrats and progressives, their retired teacher friends, and mine as well all Love Dr. Ron Paul.
#1 Honesty. He is honest, what you see is what you get.
#2. Saving Lives. As President he will have the power to end 75 years of USA foreign adventuresome meddling, occupation and exploitation. The children and people of Iraq will be 1000 times better off. The killing will stop, and they will have the right to self determination.
#3. Democrats Control Congress. All of Ron Paul's small government wishes must go through a Democratic-Corporate Controled House & Senate...thus zero will get done on that front, so ignore it. He is just being who he is, saying what he believes...live and let live.
#4 The Abortion issue: We have a conservative Supreme Court, Bush as president, and had a conservative house and senate, but nothing was done on the abortion issue: Roe Vs Wade still stands. You must be smoking something if you think that Ron Paul as president with a democratic house and senate will be changing RvWade.
#5. Peace Movement Gone. The democrats have sold out the Progressives and the Peace movement to the Corporatists Democrats who are in bed with government "contracts". The Republicans have sold out the small government is best to Corporatists in bed with government "contracts". Ron Paul is odd in the GOP because he is no sell out. This is why the GOP is scared to death of Ron Paul.
#6. Progressives hearts and minds Are Smart. By we progressives supporting Ron Paul, we keep the non interventionist goals alive, as well as the failures of Iraq War and future wars with Iran, Syria, Pakistan and N.Korea.
#7. Splitting the GOP. By supporting Ron Paul all the way, even having him written in come Election time, we split the Republican vote...perhaps as high as 15%*, thus assuring a win for a Democrat President (this could be good, only on the basis of lesser of two evils. Certainly Hillary has been all over the place on the war issue, for it, against it, won't commit when to get out, not by 2013, now by 2009...who can believe this woman? Ron Paul's record matches his deeds and words. What more do you want from a politician? A Politician! I love Denis Kucinich, but pound for pound, Ron Paul has been more consistent and on top of the NeoCon war machine with more conviction than Denis. He was even against Ronald Reagan's El Salvador actions, Panama's actions, and so on.
#8. As Ralph Nader once said, "Ron Paul's idea may not be so bad after all, if we could [which he doubts] ever flush all the federal-corporate fleas off the government dog, then we could start all over fresh. Fortunately, other than changing our 75 year Militaristic Foreign Policy, a policy of Bill Clinton as well--he carried out 10 years of Iraq no Fly zones and daily aerial bombings, Ron Paul as president, could not do us any harm."
#9. More Money for Progressive Causes. Monies freed up from returning our military overseas to the USA, could and would be spent on social programs such as health care and social security by the Democratic House and Congress.
#10. With Ron Paul, you know what we are getting. An honest man who would do as he says, abide by the Constitution and the laws of the USA, that is more than we progressives can expect from even Edwards.
