Ayoon Wa Azan ("Dr. No")
Jihad el-Khazen Al-Hayat - 26/01/08//
Only one of the four contenders will eventually win the Republican nomination to the presidential race, but this includes Dr. Ron Paul, the congressman from Texas. Had he won the nomination, I would have personally favored him over Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
Among American politicians, Ron Paul is in a league of his own. He is an avid libertarian in support of individual freedoms or the freedom of speech, a strict constitutionalist, and an opponent of foreign intervention. In other words, his message is for freedom within limited government.
Congressmen dub Paul "Dr No" since he routinely votes against new taxes, any deficit, gun controls, war funding, war on drugs, the patriotic act used by the Bush administration to conduct surveillance on citizens, and against the war on Iraq as well as any war on Iran.
If elected president, he intends to abolish the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Reserve, and the departments of education, energy, and commerce. He also intends to withdraw from the United Nations and the World Trade Organization.
Paul who served as a physician in the military wants government by the people because, as he says, they would do a better job than the government whose size and role he wants to see minimized.
The Arab reader may think that such stances would earn a politician no supporters, but American politics is something else, and Ron Paul is almost as popular as a Rock and Roll star on the internet where many websites speak of the Ron Paul Revolution. Early popularity is measured by donations and so far, Paul's campaign has raised almost $18 million, more than the amounts raised by some of the most prominent Republican contenders. On 16/12/2007, his supporters raised a record $6 million in one day.
Ron Paul had caught my attention years ago and I have written about him. He criticized the neoconservatives before the war on Iraq and continued to expand his campaign after the war. I found it unusual for a Texas congressman to dare and stand up against the war mongers and the pro-Israeli radicals, but he did, representing his constituency in the House ten consecutive terms. He now aspires to enter the White House, ranking fourth in Michigan where he earned 6% of the Republican votes, and again in South Carolina where he won 4% of the votes. I do not see him in the White House, and neither Americans nor the world will have an opportunity to hear his views and opinions that no one else dares to express.
In summer 2006, he opposed a bill in Congress that supported Israel in its war on Lebanon and said, "I follow a policy in foreign affairs called non-interventionalism. I do not believe we are making the United States more secure when we involve ourselves in conflicts overseas. The constitution really doesn't authorize us to be the policemen of the world…It is very clear, reading this resolution objectively, that all the terrorists are on one side and all the victims and innocents are on the other side. I find this unfair, particularly considering the significant higher number of civilian casualties among Lebanese civilians. I would rather advocate neutrality rather than picking sides, which is what this resolution does.
Asked last November about his opinion on "Islamic fascism", he responded, "It's a false term to make people think we're fighting Hitler. It's war propaganda designed to generate fear so that the war has to be spread." Paul's words on neoconservatives, the war in Lebanon, and the Israel cabal contradict the claims made by Norman Podhoretz the author of a book on a fourth world war and the danger of fascist Islam who supports sacrificing American youth to protect Israel's security in Iraq, Iran, or anywhere else.
If Paul's political views, opinions and statements have made him popular among voters, they have also united the liberal left and radical right against him in an unprecedented manner. Journalists and researchers from both sides have described him as a crank, a Hitler, and a fanatic racist supported by neo-Nazis.
If neo-Nazis are to be found anywhere, they would be within the radical parties and organizations of Europe and the United States, along with the radical Israel cabal, especially in the US where they support Israeli terrorism and occupation against Palestinians. They supported the war on Iraq and they still do even after it claimed a million lives, and they demand a war on Iran for the same false excuses that were used to justify the war in Iraq.
In contrast, if we put Ron Paul's politics to practice, this would result in sparing the lives of 4,000 American soldiers instead of sacrificing them at the altar of Israel's interests.
I do not see Ron Paul snatching the Republican nomination, let alone the presidency, but he deserves the presidency more than any other contender, and this is why I chose to present him to the Arab readers today.
