Libertarian candidate for Ann Arbor mayor wins Ron Paul's endorsement

The University of Michigan sophomore running for Ann Arbor mayor has gotten an endorsement from an unusual quarter: presidential candidate Ron Paul.
A low-tax, free-market Republican who's attracted nationwide grass-roots support, Paul agreed to back mayoral candidate Eric Plourde, a Paul spokesman said Tuesday.
With no Republican candidate in the mayor's race and no prospect of one, Paul - a Texas congressman and physician - was ready to endorse Plourde, Paul spokesman Tom Lizardo said.

A 2006 graduate of Lake Orion High School in Oakland County, Plourde is a member of the College Libertarians at U-M and a member of Students for Ron Paul.
"I thought it was a long shot, but our views are closely aligned and Dr. Paul is endorsing candidates, so I sent an e-mail to his campaign," said Plourde.
After some back and forth, Plourde had his endorsement.
Plourde will face the winner of a Democratic primary between incumbent John Hieftje and challenger Tom Wall.
Hieftje has been mayor since 2000. Wall ran as an independent in 2006. Both are Ann Arbor natives.
Lizardo was unapologetic about Paul's involvement in a local election.
"Dr. Paul is well aware of the issues surrounding Michigan's economic plight and the inflation and excessive taxation creating problems across the country," he said.
While it's true that Paul is not familiar with the details of what's happening in Ann Arbor, "the principles of limited government are certainly important. And Dr. Paul believes in the value of competition in economic marketplace and the marketplace of ideas," Lizardo said.
A political science major, Plourde is attending summer school to brush up on his Spanish and German before a six-week backpacking trip in Europe.
He'll return in July, as Hieftje and Wall are campaigning for the Aug. 5 primary.
